Sikora Media Group announces a new website devoted to serialized web entertainment.
LA HABRA, CA, April 21, 2007—Sikora Media Group (SMG) and its independent film division, New Renaissance Pictures, announce the launch of WebSerials.com, a new internet media venture that will provide compelling feature films in a serialized format to internet audiences. WebSerials.com will premiere this summer with two exciting new films: "Cataclysmo and the Time Boys," a sci-fi action comedy and "Project X: The True Story of Power Plant 67," a suspense-filled creature flick.
"We're thrilled to be able to offer these films in this new format," says SMG president Joshua Sikora, "If you talk to people who watch video online, they want the same thing they've always wanted: fun and exciting stories, interesting characters, and something cool they can share with their friends. The one difference for the web is simply that no one wants to sit and watch a two-hour movie on their computer. We're still not ready for that leap."
The serialized films from WebSerials.com are an attempt to bridge that divide. Ultimately, they form complete stories as feature-length films, but audiences will watch them episode by episode, scene by scene, on a weekly basis. The approach piggy-backs on the success of other web series like "LonelyGirl15"—the YouTube phenomenon of last fall that peaked with close to two million viewers. "'LonelyGirl' demonstrated that when the audience cares about the characters, they're willing to invest in an ongoing story," Sikora explains. "It means that web video is no longer limited to isolated, viral videos and clips. There's now a big web audience ready for continuing storylines and returning characters."
The chance to create content for this new audience is what led independent filmmaker Kevin Christensen to develop his new web serial, "Cataclysmo and the Time Boys." The quirky film chronicles the misadventures of two heroes from the future as they visit our time to stop Cataclysmo—a world-changing disaster that triggers a five-hundred year war. Christensen sees the serialized format as a perfect way to bring his offbeat comedy adventure to an eager and excited audience. He explains, "Every week, we'll be giving our viewers something new: some action, some drama, some romance. Always comedy. It's going to be awesome!"
The serialized film concept isn't new. Sikora references the original film serials that audiences would catch every week at their local movie theater in the 1930s and 40s. It was television in the 1950s that killed the serial when audiences started going to the theater less often. Comic books are another successful serialized medium, often with series of issues that compile into longer graphic novels.
Even as his team works to finish the content for weekly, episodic broadcasts this summer, Sikora has the larger story in mind. When a film finishes its run on the site, WebSerials.com will assemble the episodes together and sell the complete serial on DVD for audiences that prefer to watch the film uncut.
WebSerials.com will launch in July with its first two serials. A second set of serials is slated to begin in the fall. The serials will be available to users for free, both at WebSerials.com and at other popular video sites, like YouTube and MySpace. Advertising opportunities are available.
